Celebrate Motherhood with a Mother’s Day Portrait

The calendar tells me that this Sunday, May 10th is Mother’s Day.  Mother’s Day, a day when we honor the mother’s in our family. We celebrate motherhood, maternal bonds and the influence of mothers in our lives.  I recall many Mother’s Days spent with my own mother when I was in my elementary school years. We would enjoy a mother’s day brunch (that she prepared), a picnic in the sunshine (that she packed and planned). Then, in my teen years I recall spending time with her in her garden. I sat and talked with her while she planted flowers or planned out her vegetable garden.  As she grew older she would enjoy our gifts of wine and beautiful flowering plants in baskets that she would care for on her deck out back.

I stumbled into motherhood totally unprepared for the responsibilities that came with it.  While I searched for it, there was no users manual that answered all of my questions, and unfortunately I did not feel that I had a “natural mothering instinct.”   Having raised my children largely before Google was a resource, I would call my mom with my daily questions or concerns. She seemed to always have an answer. Always knew just what to say.

Luckily, my children grew up to be responsible, contributing adults and pretty darn fun people to spend time with. This in spite of my lack of a “natural mothering instinct.”  I used trial and error, positive reinforcement, the Golden Rule, and. . . wait for it . . . I learned that the most important parenting technique I used was building a connection with my children.
Fast forward to today and my boudoir photography studio.  What I have learned is that, while I want you to love the images we capture of you,  I really am in the business of promoting and celebrating connections.  We embrace who you are and provide encouragement to allow you to explore the relationship you have with yourself.  Perhaps I don’t have a natural mothering instinct, but I DO have a natural desire to connect with people, to make them feel comfortable, to allow them to be exactly who they are and to celebrate their uniqueness.  Celebrate motherhood, take time to honor the women in your life by finding a place to connect emotionally.
